in the form of methaemoglobin, but was apparently accounted for as carboxyhaemoglobin after the addition of carbon monoxide and dithionite. 4. The green pigment is distinct from choleglobin, and its formation is not prevented by carbon monoxide, showing that oxyhaemoglobin is not an intermediate in the reaction. We wish to thank Mr B. A. Collett for technical assistance during a part of the work.

Bile pigment formation in vitro from haematin and other haem derivatives.
Lemberg (1935) first showed that the green haemin of Warburg & Negelein (1930), on treatment with methanolic hydrogen chloride, gave a ferric salt of a biliverdin ester from which the ester of biliverdin itself could be obtained by shaking the chloroform solution of the salt with water. Lemberg concluded that green haemin possessed the structure of a verdohaemochromogen, i.e. it possessed an op...

1. Caffeine reacts with haematin to form a caffeine-haematin compound that has a characteristic absorption spectrum. 2. Graphical analysis of the titration of haematin with caffeine shows that 2mol.prop. of caffeine split the dimeric haematin. 3. Thermodynamic parameters suggest that the reaction involves the making and breaking of hydrophobic bonds. 4. Graphical analysis shows dimeric haem to ...
متن کاملBiliverdin reductase is a transporter of haem into the nucleus and is essential for regulation of HO-1 gene expression by haematin.
hBVR (human biliverdin reductase) is an enzyme that reduces biliverdin (the product of haem oxygenases HO-1 and HO-2 activity) to the antioxidant bilirubin. It also functions as a kinase and as a transcription factor in the MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signalling cascade. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy was used to investigate the mobility of hBVR in living cells and its functi...
متن کاملThe sulphur requirements of the erythrocytic from of Plasmodium knowlesi.
Until the discovery by Knowles & Das Gupta (1932) of a malaria parasite virulent for rhesus monkeys, the study of mammalian malaria in the laboratory was seriously hampered. This parasite, which is mildly infective to man, was named Plakenwdium knowlesi by Sinton & Mulligan (1932). Although extensive studies have been made on the culture and metabolism of the erythrocytic form of P. knowlesi (f...
متن کاملOrigin of Bile Pigments
S. H. ROBINSON (Boston) described a new experimental technique for studying the early labelled component of bilirubin in the ligated bile duct of the Gunn rat. Using 14C bilirubin he measured the total miscible bilirubin pool. In addition, the rate of bile pigment formation following the administration of 2-14C glycine was estimated. This allowed precise assessment of bilirubin and haem product...
